Black is the brainchild of Reginald Smith. Reginald had his first taste of expat life living in Beijing, China 2005 while studying Mandarin and has been back often for extended periods for his previous MBA studies at the MIT Sloan School of Management and job-related projects.  Reggie speaks and writes Chinese fluently (Mandarin aka Putonghua) and has translated several papers from Chinese to English in addition to writing an article for a Chinese logistics magazine.  Reggie also was the former webmaster of the now-defunct Blacks in China website. He currently works in Rochester, NY in supply chain management and enjoys logistics, ham radio, amateur science, and Chinese soap operas. He is also the author of two books, Scientific Work and Creativity: Advice from the Masters, written with the Citizen Scientists League and is a compendium of essays by famous scientists on scientific creativity and Higher Hopes: A Black Man’s Guide to College (Amazon Link) which is a comprehensive book on college success for Black men.

Adrianne George is the co-editor of Black Expat who eagerly came on board after being contacted by Reginald. Adrianne is an American who has lived in Belgium, England and Sweden.  She is an integrated marketing communications consultant and publisher of several blogs including the award-winning Black Women in Europe Blog, Stockholm Expat, and the EurObamaBlog.  She is the co-founder of the Women of the African Diaspora website, and has created and manages several online communities for Black women and expats.

Derek McCullough was the creative director and designer for Black A talented artist and multidisciplinary designer with an extensive international professional background in the automotive, commercial interior and company graphic design fields. Derek’s trajectory has included a myriad range of projects, large and small, from interiors for Ford’s Lincoln motor cars and corporate HQ’s like Agfa and Total Oil to identity graphics for a Saudi fashion designer. Equally, he’s culturally diverse having lived in the UK for 17 years, 7 years in Spain, a year+ in Sweden, plus project stints in Saudi Arabia. We are still mourning his death in 2017.
